Freedom from Addiction isn’t a one-time event—it’s a daily journey. And for those walking that road, whether as participants or leaders, one truth stands at the center: we need Jesus every single day.
Not just at rock bottom. Not just in crisis. Not just when the cravings hit. But every day—in every decision, every thought, every temptation, and every moment of victory.
In addiction ministry, we don’t outgrow our need for Christ. We grow deeper into it.
Recovery Is Daily, So Is Dependence
Finding freedom involves showing up day after day. Some days are heavy. Some are hopeful. But the consistent thread is this: you can’t do it alone.
Jesus said, “Apart from Me, you can do nothing” (John 15:5). That’s not just true the day you surrender your addiction—it’s true every day after.
Daily dependence means:
-
Waking up and asking Him for strength before your feet hit the floor.
-
Opening your Bible not just for knowledge, but for sustenance.
-
Praying not just to avoid relapse, but to grow in joy and holiness.
-
Trusting His grace when you fail, and leaning on His power when you’re weak.
The Danger of Self-Reliance
One of the most subtle traps in finding freedom is the belief that once you’re doing better, you no longer need to lean so hard on Jesus. But that’s like a drowning person deciding they don’t need the life raft anymore because they’re close to shore.
In addiction ministry, we must be clear: your strength isn’t enough. Your willpower isn’t enough. Your support system, as important as it is, can’t carry the full weight. Only Jesus can.
When we begin to think we’ve got this, we’re setting ourselves up for failure—or pride. Either way, we drift from the only One who can truly sustain us.
A Ministry That Models Dependence
If you lead in addiction ministry, your role is not to be the strong one—it’s to be the dependent one. Your daily walk of surrender becomes the example others follow. You get to say, “I need Jesus just as much today as I did at the start.”
This is freeing. You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to stay close to the One who does.
Ministry built on daily dependence looks like:
-
Praying first, before planning or speaking.
-
Admitting weakness, not pretending your not weak.
-
Confessing sin, not hiding it.
-
Pointing people to Jesus, not to yourself.
-
Opening the Word daily, because your soul needs it.
How to Cultivate Daily Dependence
-
Start with the Word – Even if it’s one verse, feed on Scripture every day. Let God’s truth re-center your mind and reshape your desires.
-
Pray Honestly – Dependence doesn’t mean long, eloquent prayers. It means real prayers. “Lord, help me.” “I can’t do this alone.” “Jesus, be near.”
-
Walk in Community – God often sustains us through the voices and presence of others. Don’t isolate. Stay in gospel-saturated community.
-
Celebrate Grace – When you fall short, don’t hide in shame. Run to Jesus. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23).
-
Keep Jesus Central – Let every meeting, every story, every moment be anchored in Him. He is not just the foundation—He’s the lifeline.
Strength in Weakness
The apostle Paul said, “When I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Cor. 12:10). That’s the paradox of dependence: our greatest strength is found not in independence, but in daily, humble, childlike reliance on Christ.
In addiction ministry, this is our hope. Not that we’ll become strong enough to never struggle again, but that we’ll become so dependent on Jesus that He becomes our greatest treasure and most present help.
You needed Jesus yesterday. You’ll need Him tomorrow. But most of all— you need Him today.
Let that need drive you to Him, not away from Him. Because Jesus doesn’t just give you strength for recovery—He is your recovery.
