Freedom in Christ Is Not the Absence of Struggle, but the Presence of Grace.

In other words, biblical freedom is not freedom from struggle. It’s freedom to struggle rightly—with Christ beside us, within a community, armed with truth, and covered in mercy.

What Does Freedom in Christ Really Mean?

For many believers—especially those walking through addiction recovery or deep personal battles—freedom in Christ can feel like an elusive promise.

We hear phrases like:

  • “You’re a new creation!”
  • “The old has passed away!”
  • “Sin no longer has dominion over you!”

But what happens when you still feel the pull of your old habits? When temptation lingers? When you fall again, even after praying, crying, and trying? Does that mean you're not truly free?

Absolutely not. Here’s the truth we must cling to:

Freedom in Christ is not the absence of struggle—it’s the presence of grace.

Grace Doesn’t Mean Easy—It Means Empowered

Grace doesn’t remove the battlefield. It gives us the strength to fight. Freedom in Christ is not a magic wand that erases all temptation. It’s the powerful, sustaining presence of God in the midst of temptation, failure, and growth.

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions…” — Titus 2:11–12

Grace trains us. It shapes us. It walks with us through the battle—not around it.

In other words, biblical freedom is not freedom from struggle. It’s freedom to struggle rightly—with Christ beside us, within a community, armed with truth, and covered in mercy.

What Grace Does That Self-Effort Can’t

Without grace, our response to sin is often shame, guilt, and more striving. But with grace:

  • We confess sin, not conceal it (1 John 1:9)
  • We repent in hope, not despair (2 Corinthians 7:10)
  • We grow in dependency, not self-reliance (John 15:5)
  • We obey out of love, not legalism (John 14:15)

God’s grace does not mean you’ll never struggle again. It means your struggle doesn’t define you. Your identity is now rooted in Christ, not in your performance.

Freedom That Lasts Is Fueled by Grace

At Freedom That Lasts, we help people understand that their struggle is not a disqualification—it’s an opportunity for discipleship. Growth in grace happens over time, in community, and through gospel truth.

We don’t gather to pretend we’re perfect. We gather to remind one another that grace is greater than sin, and that freedom is found not in our strength, but in our Savior.

A few practical examples of grace at work:

  • A member who falls back into old patterns but runs to the cross instead of hiding in shame.
  • A care group that responds to confession with truth, prayer, and encouragement—not judgment.
  • A volunteer who patiently walks with someone for months, trusting God to work in His time.

These are victories of grace—not the absence of struggle, but the presence of Christ in the middle of it.

Freedom Is the Journey, Not Just the Destination

Freedom in Christ is both positional and progressive:

  • Positionally, we are already free in Christ (Galatians 5:1).
  • Progressively, we are learning to live in that freedom every day (2 Corinthians 3:18).

You may still feel weak—but in Christ, grace is stronger. You may still face battles—but grace means you never fight alone. You may not be where you want to be—but you are not who you used to be.

That’s real freedom.

Three Reminders for the Journey

  1. Struggle is part of sanctification. God uses the battle to shape your heart, humble your pride, and increase your dependence on Him.
  2. Grace meets you where you are—but never leaves you there. It is patient, but it is also purposeful. God is committed to your growth.
  3. You’re never alone. Christ is with you. The Spirit is in you. And the church surrounds you.
