The Real Battle Behind Addiction: Introducing the Strongholds Demolished Series

There Is More Going On Than You Think

You've tried to stop. Maybe dozens of times. You've made promises, drawn lines, and crossed them anyway. You've wondered if something is fundamentally broken inside you — or if this is simply who you are.

But what if the battle you're fighting is bigger than willpower? What if the war for your freedom isn't primarily fought in a treatment center, a twelve-step meeting, or a therapist's office — but in the unseen realm where truth and lies collide?

The Apostle Paul didn't mince words: the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4). That word — strongholds — is the key to understanding what addiction really is and why it is so hard to break free from.

What Is a Stronghold?

A stronghold is a fortified pattern of thinking — a lie so deeply embedded in the mind that it shapes how a person sees God, themselves, and the world around them. Strongholds don't build themselves overnight. They are constructed over years through repeated exposure to deception, unmet longings that have been placed on the throne of the heart, and the relentless strategy of an enemy who wants to keep you bound.

Addiction is not simply a brain disease to be managed or a bad habit to be broken. At its root, it is a spiritual condition — a stronghold of deception, shame, and misplaced desire that only the power of God can demolish.

"For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds." — 2 Corinthians 10:4

This Series Is for You

Whether you are the one trapped in the cycle of life-dominating sin, a pastor wondering how to help people in your congregation, or a chapter director walking alongside someone through the Freedom That Lasts process — this series is designed to equip you to fight the right battle in the right way.

Over the next four posts, we will cover:

  • Part 1 – Recognizing the Enemy's Strategy: How the adversary operates in the context of addiction and what his playbook looks like
  • Part 2 – The Weapons of Our Warfare: What it means to fight with divinely powerful weapons from 2 Corinthians 10:3–5
  • Part 3 – Taking Every Thought Captive: The daily discipline of bringing the mind under the lordship of Christ
  • Part 4 – The Full Armor of God: How Ephesians 6 equips believers to stand firm and fight well

A Word of Hope Before We Begin

Paul's declaration in 2 Corinthians 10 is not a call to fear — it is a call to confidence. The weapons God has given us are divinely powerful. The strongholds that have held you are not too thick, too old, or too deep for the Gospel to penetrate.

Christ came to proclaim liberty to the captives (Luke 4:18). That is not poetry. It is a promise. And it is the foundation of everything you will read in this series.

If you or someone you love is in the grip of addiction, you don't have to face this battle alone. Find a Freedom That Lasts chapter near you at freedomthatlasts.com/find-a-chapter, or learn how to bring this ministry to your church at freedomthatlasts.com.
