Nothing that costs nothing is worth much.

We know this instinctively about almost everything in life. The relationships that matter most cost something. The things worth protecting usually cost something to obtain. And yet somehow, when it comes to our freedom in Christ, it's easy to treat it like it just showed up one day, no strings attached, nothing behind it.

Paul won't let the Corinthians think that way. "You are not your own," he writes, "for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." That word bought is doing a lot of work. It's the language of the marketplace. Of a transaction. Someone paid something, for someone else, and now there's a new owner.

Your freedom has a price tag, and the price was Jesus!

This is easy to say and hard to actually let sink in. Because if I really believe I was bought, that changes what I do with the thing that was purchased. You don't buy something valuable and then hand it back over to be misused. Paul's logic is simple. Your body was bought at an enormous cost. So it matters what you do with it.

This is where the Gospel gets practical for anyone fighting a life-dominating sin. Whatever you're using your body for, whatever substance you're pouring into it or behavior you're indulging in, ask the question Paul is really asking. Am I treating this like something that was bought at a price, or like something that was never worth anything to begin with?

Freedom isn't cheap, and it isn't meant to be wasted.

I think this is where a lot of people get stuck. They know they've been forgiven, but they haven't connected that forgiveness to a cost. And when you don't understand the cost, you don't understand the weight of what you're carrying, or the value of what you've been given.

You were purchased by the Son of God at the price of his own body. That's not a guilt trip. It's the foundation for a life lived differently.
