“Just be yourself.” “You do you.” “Freedom means doing whatever makes you happy.”
These phrases dominate modern thinking. Culture promotes the idea that freedom is found in breaking free from all limits, following your heart, and refusing to let anyone tell you what to do. But here’s the question we must ask: Has this version of freedom delivered on its promise?
For many, the pursuit of self-defined freedom has led to greater confusion, deeper bondage, and unfulfilled longings. More choices have led to more anxiety. More freedom has often led to more addiction. Why? Because freedom without truth is just another form of slavery.
Worldly Freedom vs. Biblical Freedom
The Bible offers a radically different—and far better—vision of freedom.
Worldly freedom says, “I answer to no one.” But Jesus says, “Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin” (John 8:34). Left to ourselves, we aren’t free. We’re bound—bound by habits, desires, fears, guilt, and shame. Even our efforts to fix ourselves can become another kind of slavery.
Biblical freedom is not about escaping God’s authority, but about being restored to it. The gospel teaches that we were made for relationship with God, but sin severed that relationship. Christ came not just to forgive our sins but to set us free from sin’s power.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36
True freedom isn’t found in being your own master. It’s found in having a new Master—One who is gracious, good, and gave His life for you.
What Does Freedom in Christ Look Like?
Freedom in Christ is more than a slogan—it’s a new way of life rooted in a new identity. When we trust in Jesus, we are:
-
Forgiven from every sin (Colossians 2:13)
-
Freed from shame and condemnation (Romans 8:1)
-
Filled with the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
-
Formed into Christ’s likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18)
This isn’t a freedom that says, “Do what you want.” It’s a freedom that says, “You are now able to do what you were created for—to know God, love Him, and walk in His ways.” It’s the kind of freedom that leads to joy, peace, and lasting transformation.
Freedom That Lasts—Not a Program, a Person
At Freedom That Lasts, we help people discover that freedom is not found in a program, a process, or a performance. It’s found in a Person—Jesus Christ.
We believe the gospel doesn’t just deal with our behavior. It transforms the heart. The answer isn’t behavior modification—it’s spiritual regeneration. That’s why FTL exists: to point people to freedom that lasts by teaching God’s Word, building Christ-centered community, and fostering long-term discipleship.
Whether someone is struggling with addiction, anxiety, bitterness, or shame—Christ offers hope that goes deeper than the struggle.
Four Truths About Spiritual Freedom
Here are four key truths that shape how we understand spiritual freedom:
-
True freedom comes through surrender.
-
Freedom in Christ is not the absence of struggle, but the presence of grace.
-
Freedom means obedience becomes a joy, not a burden.
-
Freedom is meant to be lived out in community.
Freedom in the Context of Addiction
For those caught in addiction, the world often offers identity-shaping labels: “once an addict, always an addict.” But Scripture says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Through Freedom That Lasts, individuals experience heart-level discipleship that doesn’t just manage sin but leads to transformation from the inside out. Our weekly gatherings, centered in local churches, combine worship, teaching, care groups, and Scripture memory to build lasting change.
Are You Ready to Be Free?
Freedom doesn’t start with trying harder. It starts with trusting Jesus—acknowledging your need, surrendering your will, and receiving the gift of grace.
Whether you’re struggling with sin, shame, addiction, or simply weary of self-effort, know this: freedom is not far off. It’s found in Christ, and it’s available to you.
