Part 4: "Freedom Isn't a Solo Journey"

There's a dangerous myth in our culture: real strength means going it alone. We admire the self-made person, the lone warrior, the individual who pulls themselves up by their own bootstraps.

But God designed something better. And for those struggling with addiction or life-dominating sin, understanding this design could be the difference between freedom and bondage.

The writer of Hebrews commands, "Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near" (Hebrews 10:24-25).

This isn't a suggestion for the spiritually weak. It's God's design for all believers. We were never meant to fight sin alone.

James makes it even more explicit: "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed" (James 5:16). Notice what happens when we bring our struggles into the light with other believers? Healing.

Sin thrives in isolation. It whispers, "Don't tell anyone. They'll judge you. They'll think less of you. You can handle this on your own." But these are lies. The enemy knows that sin exposed to the light loses its power.

Consider Paul's instruction in Galatians 6:1-2: "Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."

This is the church functioning as God designed. Not people sitting in judgment, but brothers and sisters lovingly helping each other fight sin and walk in holiness.

But what does this actually look like?

First, find a local church. Not just any gathering, but a Bible-believing church where God's Word is preached faithfully and people are committed to one another's spiritual growth. If you're not connected to a church, this is your starting point.

Second, pursue genuine relationships. Not just Sunday morning handshakes, but real friendships where you can be honest about your struggles. This requires vulnerability, which feels risky. But the risk of isolation is far greater.

Third, find a biblical discipleship ministry. The regular Sunday service is vital, but you also need focused, intentional discipleship around your specific struggles. This is where a ministry like Freedom That Lasts becomes crucial.

Fourth, be the friend you need. As you grow, look for opportunities to encourage others, to speak truth when they're believing lies, to pray with them in their battles. Freedom multiplies when we share it.

Here's what won't work: trying to overcome addiction through isolation, even if you're reading your Bible alone. It won't work because God designed the church to be the environment where transformation happens.

You need people who will ask hard questions. Who will celebrate your victories and grieve your defeats. Who will remind you of your identity in Christ when you forget. Who will pray for you when you're weak. Who will stand with you in the battle.

This isn't weakness—it's wisdom. It's acknowledging how God designed us and submitting to His better plan.

Freedom That Lasts provides exactly this kind of community within your local church. It's not a secular program that meets in a separate building—it's discipleship happening where it should: among the body of Christ. Find a chapter at freedomthatlasts.com, or if you're a pastor, discover how to start one in your church. Freedom isn't a solo journey—it's a community journey, and you don't have to walk it alone.
