The Father's Heart Series Part 1 - The Prodigal

He's not waiting for you to have the right words. He's not weighing your track record. He's scanning the horizon for the silhouette of someone he loves.

He rehearsed the speech the whole walk home.

"I am no more worthy to be called your son. Just make me one of your hired servants." He had blown through his inheritance, hit the bottom of a pigsty, and now he was limping back with a practiced apology and a desperate plan.

He expected a lecture. Maybe a handshake. Not what he got.

The father sees him while he's still a long way off. He doesn't wait. He runs. Throws his arms around him, cuts off the speech mid-sentence, and calls for a party.

This is the most famous story Jesus ever told. And it's not primarily about the son.

It's about the father.

What kind of father runs? In the ancient Near East, a man of standing didn't run. Running meant lifting your robe, exposing your legs. It was considered undignified. Shameful, even. This father chooses public embarrassment to get to his son faster.

He's not waiting for you to have the right words. He's not weighing your track record. He's scanning the horizon for the silhouette of someone he loves.

The enemy wants you to believe the shame disqualifies you. That you have to clean yourself up first. That God is standing at the door with a disappointed look and a list.

But that's not this story. The father in Luke 15 sees his son's wretchedness and runs toward it. Not after the cleanup. While he's still far off.

Your sin, whatever it is, has not put you beyond the reach of a running God.

There's a moment near the end that often gets missed. The older son is furious. He's been faithful, he says, and nobody ever threw him a party. The father goes out to him too. Same love. Different direction.

You may have spent years rehearsing your apology, convinced you need to earn your way back.

The Father isn't waiting for your speech. He's already running.

📖 Next week: What do you do when your earthly father has failed you? We look at what Scripture says directly into that wound, and the Father who never leaves.
